God’s Power Shown in Creatures

41 [a]Can you drag out [b](A)Leviathan with a fishhook,
And press down his tongue with a rope?
Can you (B)put a [c]rope in his nose,
And pierce his jaw with a [d]hook?
Will he make many pleas to you,
Or will he speak to you gentle words?
Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him as a servant forever?
Will you play with him as with a bird,
And tie him down for your young girls?
Will the [e]traders bargain for him?
Will they divide him among the merchants?
Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?
Lay your hand on him.
Remember the battle; [f]you will not do it again!
[g]Behold, [h]your expectation is false;
Will [i]you be hurled down even at the sight of him?
10 No one is so reckless that he dares to (C)stir him;
Who then is he who opposes Me?
11 Who has (D)been first to give to Me, that I should repay him?
Whatever is (E)under the entire heaven is Mine.

12 “I will not be silent about his limbs,
Or his mighty strength, or his graceful frame.
13 Who can [j]strip off his outer covering?
Who can [k]pierce his double [l]armor?
14 Who can open the doors of his face?
Around his teeth there is terror.
15 His [m]strong scales are his pride,
Locked as with a tight seal.
16 One is so close to another
That no air can come between them.
17 They are joined one to another;
They clasp each other and cannot be separated.
18 His sneezes flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the (F)eye of dawn.
19 From his mouth go burning torches;
Sparks of fire leap forth.
20 From his nostrils smoke goes out
As from a boiling pot and burning reeds.
21 His breath sets coals aglow,
And a flame goes forth from his mouth.
22 In his neck dwells strength,
And dismay leaps before him.
23 The folds of his flesh are joined together,
Firm and immovable on him.
24 His heart is as firm as a stone,
And as firm as a lower millstone.
25 When he rises up, the [n]mighty are afraid;
Because of the crashing they are bewildered.
26 The sword that reaches him cannot [o]prevail,
Nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
27 He regards iron as straw,
Bronze as rotten wood.
28 The [p]arrow cannot make him flee;
Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.
29 Clubs are regarded as stubble;
He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.
30 His underparts are like sharp pieces of pottery;
He [q]spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mud.
31 He makes the depths boil like a pot;
He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.
32 Behind him he illuminates a pathway;
One would think the deep to be gray-haired.
33 (G)Nothing on [r]earth is like him,
One made without fear.
34 [s]He looks on everything that is high;
He is king over all the (H)sons of pride.”

(A)Beloved, I am (B)not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had (C)from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. [a]On the other hand, I am writing (D)a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because (E)the darkness is passing away and (F)the true Light is already shining. The one who says that he is in the Light and yet (G)hates his (H)brother or sister is in the darkness until now. 10 (I)The one who loves his brother and sister remains in the Light, and there is nothing in him to cause stumbling. 11 But the one who (J)hates his brother or sister is in the darkness and (K)walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has (L)blinded his eyes.

12 I am writing to you, (M)little children, because (N)your sins have been forgiven you on account of His name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him (O)who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because (P)you have overcome (Q)the evil one. I have written to you, children, because (R)you know the Father. 14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him (S)who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are (T)strong, and the (U)word of God remains in you, and (V)you have overcome the evil one.

Do Not Love the World

15 Do not love (W)the world nor the things in the world. (X)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, (Y)the lust of the flesh and (Z)the lust of the eyes and (AA)the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 (AB)The world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who (AC)does the will of God continues to live forever.

18 Children, (AD)it is the last hour; and just as you heard that (AE)antichrist is coming, (AF)even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 (AG)They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, (AH)so that [b]it would be evident that they all are not of us. 20 [c]But you have an (AI)anointing from (AJ)the Holy One, and (AK)you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but (AL)because you do know it, and [d]because no lie is (AM)of the truth. 22 Who is the liar except (AN)the one who denies that Jesus is the [e]Christ? This is (AO)the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (AP)Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, see that what you heard (AQ)from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also (AR)will remain in the Son and in the Father.

The Promise Is Eternal Life

25 (AS)This is the promise which He Himself [f]made to us: eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to (AT)deceive you. 27 And as for you, the (AU)anointing which you received from Him remains in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing (AV)teaches you about all things, and is (AW)true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, [g]you remain in Him.

28 Now, (AX)little children, remain in Him, so that when He (AY)appears, we may have (AZ)confidence and (BA)not [h]draw back from Him in shame [i]at His (BB)coming. 29 If you know that (BC)He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness also (BD)has been born of Him.

Job’s Confession

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said,

“I know that (A)You can do all things,
And that no plan is impossible for You.
‘Who is this who (B)conceals advice without knowledge?’
Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things (C)too wonderful for me, which I do not know.
‘Please listen, and I will speak;
I will (D)ask You, and You instruct me.’
I have (E)heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my (F)eye sees You;
Therefore I retract,
And I repent, sitting on dust and ashes.”

God Is Displeased with Job’s Friends

It came about after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is trustworthy, (G)as My servant Job has. Now therefore, take for yourselves (H)seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a (I)burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will (J)pray for you. (K)For I will [a]accept him so as not to do with you as your foolishness deserves, because you have not spoken of Me what is trustworthy, as My servant Job has.” So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord told them; and the Lord [b]accepted Job.

God Restores Job’s Fortunes

10 The Lord also (L)restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased double all that Job had. 11 Then all his (M)brothers, all his sisters, and all who had known him before came to him, and they ate bread with him in his house; and they (N)sympathized with him and comforted him for all the adversities that the Lord had brought on him. And each one gave him a [c]piece of money, and each a ring of gold. 12 (O)The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; (P)and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys. 13 (Q)He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. 15 In all the land no women were found as beautiful as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them inheritances among their brothers. 16 After this, Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons and his grandsons, four generations. 17 (R)And Job died, an old man and full of days.

The Triumphal Entry

11 (A)And as they *approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and (B)Bethany, near (C)the Mount of Olives, He *sent two of His disciples, and *said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he [a]will send it back here.” They went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they *untied it. And some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them just as Jesus had said, and they gave them permission. (D)They *brought the colt to Jesus and *put their cloaks on it; and He sat on it. And many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. And those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:

[b]Hosanna!
(E)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;
[c]Hosanna (F)in the highest!”

11 (G)And Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple area; and after looking around at everything, (H)He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.

12 (I)On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry. 13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.

Jesus Drives Money Changers from the Temple

15 (J)Then they *came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple area and began to drive out those who were selling and buying on the temple grounds, and He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling [d]doves; 16 and He would not allow anyone to carry [e]merchandise through the temple grounds. 17 And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written: ‘(K)My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? (L)But you have made it a den of robbers.” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard this, and they (M)began seeking how to put Him to death; for they were afraid of Him, because all (N)the crowd was astonished at His teaching.

19 And (O)whenever evening came, [f]they would leave the city.

20 (P)As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 And being reminded, Peter *said to Him, “(Q)Rabbi, look, the fig tree that You cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered and *said to them, (R)Have faith in God. 23 (S)Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted to him. 24 Therefore, I say to you, (T)all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you. 25 And whenever you (U)stand praying, (V)forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you for your [g]offenses. 26 [[h](W)But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your [i]offenses.”]
